Where can I find the My Documents folder?

Category: Backup  |  Hits: 599

On Windows operating systems (except NT), My Documents is the name of a special folder on the computer's hard drive that is commonly used to store a user's documents, music, pictures, downloads, and other files.

The following list shows where the Documents folder is stored by default, as it varies by operating system (substitute [user name] with the name you use to log into your computer):

  • On Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003:
    C:\Documents and Settings\[user name]\My Documents
Other common data folders, like My Pictures, My Videos, etc. are stored within the My Documents folder.
  • On Windows Vista:
    (C:\Users\[user name]\Documents
    C:\Computer\[user name]\Pictures, etc.
  • On Windows 7:
    C:\Computer\[user name]\My Documents
    C:\Computer\[user name]\My Pictures, etc.

Other important settings located in your [user name] folder include:

  • Application Data (customized controls for programs installed for that user).
  • Desktop (all files and folders stored on the user's desktop)
  • Favorites (Internet Explorer browser links)
  • Start Menu (settings)
  • Templates, etc.
